Step by Step Tutorial on How to Create a Color-Coded Checklist for Child with ADHD

Colorful Visual Aid to Keep Your Child with ADHD on Track

Everything is better in color, right? After continuous nagging my son to complete his daily chores and tasks and attempting various unsuccessful strategies, I finally found a solution (that keeps my sanity intact!)

1. Purchase a Simple Daytimer, Highlighters, and Colored Pens

I found this daily planner on Amazon which works well for my son. These are my favorite highlighters and colored rollerball pens. (Plus, they are really fun to use!) They all match, making it easy to coordinate colors.


➡️ PRO TIP: Keep your child’s daytimer in one specific location in your house and keep the pens and highlighters in a cute container and to avoid losing them. (Bonus for cool #SeattleMariners cup!)

2. Assign Different Colors to Tasks

Now the fun part! Create categories and assign colors for clear and easy visual for your child. Here is what we use:

  • Red – Math
  • Orange – Language Arts
  • Yellow – Science
  • Green – History
  • Light Blue – Martial Arts
  • Dark Blue – Baseball
  • Purple – Meals
  • Pink – Chores

3. Schedule the Child’s Day

Set a clear schedule for your child. We are homeschoolers so I schedule breaks throughout the day during his learning time. I require 60 minutes of math daily but, because of his struggle to stay on task, we break it up into two 30 minute chunks of time.

4. Block out Free Time to Give a Clear Visual

I use white space to display a sharp contrast to the color so my son can see when he gets free time. I have my son write his goals in the free space so he can visually keep track of what he’s working toward.


BONUS! Seeing where his free time is, motivates him to move faster to get there!

5. Make Checkboxes for Your Child to Mark Off

You love to check things off, right? ✅ So do our kiddos! Each box my son checks is a little confidence booster and a mini-celebration to remind him, “I did it!” and witnessing that pay off for him is priceless!

My son, who has ADHD, is 13 and he has been using this process for almost a year now. His confidence and productivity have increased, and my nagging has decreased! Win/win! Happy Momma = Happy Everybody! WHOO HOO! (I know you get me, right?!)


➡️ PRO TIP: Plan something extra special (family movie night, extra Xbox time, stay up late, etc.) at the end of the week to celebrate your child’s accomplishment!
